RIYADH, 2 October 2005 — Of the estimated 2.2 million Internet users in the Kingdom, the majority regularly try to access forbidden or indecent material, Arab News has learned.
“Of those who log on to the Internet, 92.5 percent are trying to access a website that, for one reason or another, has been blocked,” said Dr. Mishaal Al-Kadhi, acting general manager of the King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST).
KACST is not only the Internet gateway for the Kingdom but also acts as a filter for unsuitable material. The official said that pornographic material was one of the main items on the city’s “black list” which also includes gambling, terrorism and politics as well as anything contrary to Islamic beliefs.
He said that since the royal decree was issued in 1998 choosing KACST as the gateway for the Internet in the Kingdom and authorizing it to act as a filter, a special committee had been set up to decide what should and should not be inaccessible.
“A permanent security panel was established for this purpose. It consisted of members from 10 ministries, headed by the Interior Ministry,” he explained. A year after the panel’s establishment, 85 percent of the material on the blocked sites was pornographic with the remaining being what was deemed “inappropriate” for the Kingdom.
Asked why he thought many of those who access the web in the Kingdom were looking for pornography, Al-Kadhi said that he did not believe the Kingdom was any different from other nations in the world regarding this phenomenon. He went on to note, however, that a new dangerous tendency has begun to sweep the Internet: People “have shifted from pornography to pedophilia.”
Common sense, they were looking for online pornography more than other nations because they dont get to see their own women!!
He said that according to statistics from different countries around the world, there had been a global increase in the demand for pedophilia on the Internet.
So what, forget the internet, pedophilia happen in Saudi Arabia on dirty dark streets, behind shopping malls, in dark tinted cars, inside police cars and stations at night, rest houses and resorts, etc, etc, you name it, these are just few examples.
“Pedophilia has become a major problem in many countries. In Germany alone there are 30,000 people addicted to pedophilia and 20,000 others who are its victims. There is even a nationwide campaign there that asks people, ‘Do you like children too much?’” he said. He said that there was a similar problem in Italy too.
Al-Kadhi said that according to a Swedish official responsible for filtering the Internet there, “after Sweden passed new laws in the year 2000 aimed at preventing people from having sex with children, many had turned to their pets.”
Ok this offical is a responsible for filtering the internet, not reporting the social behaviours of their country. Then what this person has got to do with non-internet activities and why the heck an internet authority would waste time and money to research on what their nation is having sex with after child-porn is blocked????? This is a job of ministry of social affairs and such statement should come from them, not an unnammed offical responsible for internet filtering.
He said that these bizarre sexual preferences were being fought by the European Union with new legislation. “The governments of many European countries are now using ‘safer Internet’ from which this kind of material is filtered.” No they dont belive in babying their citizen by blocking and filtering the internet, but they rather fight it with education and intelligence. Thousands of people and pedophillia rings have been busted and arrested since the champaign started somewhere in 2001 (not sure)
He pointed out that many committees were trying to increase public awareness of the phenomenon. “We (officials in Saudi Arabia) feel justified since we blocked this kind of thing from the very beginning and will continue to do so,” he said.
Yes but you did not mention many other non-pornographic material blocked. Do website preaching human right, forigen worker rights, women right, social freedom and health also qualify as pornopgraphic??? what about Google SafeSearch??? why do your enforce Google SafeSearch they redirecting??
Al-Kadhi said that KACST had received the Asia Pacific Information and Technology Award for providing the best software to block adult sites.
No, they did not recive any such Asia-Pacific Award. But i will satisfy their optimistism for award by giving a "Shame on You 2005" award.
The system uses “Robots,” a program that automatically blocks certain phrases on an adult website and has an accuracy of 99.9 percent, he said.
Dumbass, take a lesson in O'Level Computing. Robots is a term for web crawlers used to index website on keyword basis for various purpose such as listing in search engine or inclusion in black list of a flitering software. Perhaps i can question the validity of your MIS degree now??? And now to the more serious part, KACST does not use any program called Robot, or even a software utilizing robots. You are using a software called SmartFilter made by a US firm Secure Computing. Just a common sense note, if KACST/ISU was using any program based on keyword indexing, the so-called roboting method, then not only thousand of websites on the internet would prove it by their access log but also it would be much easier to keep your website out of KACST block list - by simply blocking the KACST/ISU robot aka crawler.
Asked about the blocking of sites that promote terrorism, he said that KACST works only as a technical agency and that it blocks such sites when it receives an order to do so from the Interior Ministry.
And what about the websites promoting the terrorism under the so-called phrase of Jihad or supporting sucide bombing and acts such. Dont you count that as terrorism.
He explained that KASCT did not screen personal e-mails and would not do so unless it received a request relating to national security from the ministry.
Commenting on the blocking of websites which would permit Internet users to access information about other religions such as Buddhism, Judaism and Christianity, the official said that there were no laws to ban those sites but that KACST naturally made mistakes like any other group or organization.
But KACST is not suppose to block any website until an order form higher authority is recieved to do so, then how this can be counted as a mistake. You are contradicting yourself Mr. Minister.
He said KACST had ignored requests from many people to block all religious sites except for Islamic ones. Any person, he added, may fill out a request concerning a blocked URL and send it to KACST, mentioning the reasons why the site should not be blocked.
Well in the past and even in present as i recall, many non-islamic religious websites were blocked, even those who did not insult islam, islamic teaching, Saudi Arabia and its monarchs.
“The request is reviewed within 24 hours,” Al-Kadhi added. He said KACST was not to blame for the slow Internet dial-up connections in the Kingdom, adding that the problem was with the Saudi Telecom Company lines.
Atleast this is true. But i am sick of Unresolved Host Name errors even when accessing common websites such as MSN, Google, etc etc..and even ArabNews.. they are sure not because of STC, are they??? Please fix your DNS cache now!!

Only this moron did not knew that in Europe, their mindless medival practice is not tolerated at all and he may face jail for writting such content. How ever he was lucky to be released after 22 days trials, some fine and a study of constitution. I wonder what breeeds soo much anti-women feelings in the minds of these Mullahs. Is it because of their frustation of not able to score some???

The judge told Mohamed Kamal Mustafa, imam of a mosque in the southern resort of Fuengirola, to spend six months studying three articles of the constitution and the universal declaration of human rights.
Mr. Mustafa was sentenced to 15 months in jail and fined about $2,600 last year after being found guilty of inciting violence against women.
A judge released him after 22 days in jail on the condition that he undertake a re-education course. The Spanish government has set up a commission to find ways for the Muslim community to regulate itself. A central recommendation is that imams speak Spanish and have a basic knowledge of human rights and Spanish law.
In his book "Women in Islam," published four years ago, Mr. Mustafa wrote that verbal warnings followed by a period of sexual inactivity could be used to discipline a disobedient wife.
If that failed, he argued that, according to Islamic law, beatings could be judiciously administered.
"The blows should be concentrated on the hands and feet using a rod that is thin and light so that it does not leave scars or bruises on the body," he wrote.
Mr. Mustafa's lessons, which he must pay for, will be taught by teachers from Malaga University.
According to La Vanguardia newspaper, he will have to study articles 10, 14 and 15 of the constitution. The first two address "the dignity of a person and inviolable rights" and states "all Spaniards are equal before the law."
The third one states "the moral and physical integrity of a person in no case can be submitted to torture nor inhuman or degrading punishments or treatment."

US Delays Decision on Religion Sanctions on Saudi Arabia

The Bush administration has put off for six months a decision on whether to sanction Saudi Arabia for violations of religious freedom. The key U.S. ally was cited as a country of particular concern on the issue in a State Department report a year ago.
Officials here say Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has notified the Congress that she has authorized a 180-day waiver of action to allow more time for talks with Saudi Arabia on improving its record on religious freedom.
The Gulf kingdom, a key regional ally of the United States, was listed as one of the most severe violators of religious liberties in the State Department's annual report on the issue released a year ago.
The annual report is mandated by a 1998 act of Congress, which also provides for a range of sanctions against countries found to be severe violators of religious freedom.
Saudi Arabia was one of three countries, along with Vietnam and Eritrea, added to the list of so-called "countries of particular concern" in last year's report.
The report said flatly that religious freedom does not exist in Saudi Arabia and is not protected by the country's laws.
It said only followers of the state-sanctioned version of Sunni Islam have freedom of worship, and that adherents of other faiths risk imprisonment, lashing, deportation or even torture.
Speaking to VOA, State Department Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli noted that the administration did not exercise the option to entirely waive the possibility of sanctions against Saudi Arabia on national security grounds.
Instead, Mr. Ereli said American diplomats intend to engage Saudi authorities in the coming months with the hope of developing a plan of action to deal with U.S. concerns, including allowing other religious groups to hold public worship sessions, and giving them the right to possess their respective holy books and other religious documents.
"I think there's a possibility, we hope a probability, that Saudi Arabia together with the United States will be able to develop a plan of action to deal with these issues," said Mr. Ereli. "And based on that, in 180 days, we'll review and decide whether sanctions are warranted, or whether they've made sufficient progress in addressing the shortcomings that we've identified."
Vietnam was spared the risk of U.S. sanctions when it reached an agreement with a senior State Department envoy last May, committing to ease curbs of religious practices.
Last week, the State Department notified Congress that it was banning the commercial export of certain defense items to Eritrea because of its continued status as a country of particular concern.
It was the first time sanctions have been applied to any country under the U.S. religious freedom law.
The September report also listed Burma, China, North Korea, Iran and Sudan among leading violators. All of them had previously been cited, and all of them already face varying sorts of U.S. sanctions for human rights violations.
A State Department official said Secretary Rice raised the religious freedom issue in a Washington meeting last week with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal and stressed the importance of continuing to work on the matter.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, a monitoring group established under the 1998 Congressional act, noted with approval the administration's decision not to invoke a national interests waiver on Saudi Arabia.
In a statement Friday, the commission said it hopes the course of action will be justified by "genuine progress" in the religious dialogue with the Saudis.
The commission says that in the absence of such progress, the administration should ban exports of high-technology items with police or military applications to Saudi agencies responsible for religious-freedom violations.
It has also recommended a ban on U.S. travel for Saudi officials engaged in such violations, or who globally propagate an ideology promoting hate, intolerance and human rights violations.

Saudi Women Enjoy Special Treatment in Men’s Sections

JEDDAH, 10 September 2005 — “No, don’t go to the bank that has the women’s section; drive to the other branch that only has a men’s section,” Sarah told her driver.
Her behavior is not unusual. For an increasing number of Saudi women, it’s actually preferred. They claim that they get better services at men’s sections at banks, restaurants and airports to name a few. No matter how crowded a place or how long the queue, women often are served first.
“They treat me like a princess at the bank’s men’s section,” Sarah said.
She told Arab News that as she sets foot in the bank, everyone offers help. The security guard asks what kind of service she wants and then personally guide her to the employee in charge. That employee will then motion to her to step up and ignore the queue. He will politely finish her request in a matter of seconds. She said that wouldn’t be the case in the women’s sections.
“Although women’s sections aren’t as crowded as the men’s, I usually spend more time there,” she said. “They’re very bureaucratic and obsessed with paperwork.”
Saudi men, on the other hand, find such attitudes unfair and obvious discrimination. They contend that as women demand equality, they should be treated as equal as the men in all matters. “They shouldn’t be given such privileges,” said an angry fast-food customer.
He said he could be driving in the heat for an hour and wait in the restaurant queue for about 20 minutes to buy his lunch while a woman sitting in the back seat of her car can just step in the restaurant and buy whatever she wants in a matter of seconds.
“If that isn’t discrimination, I don’t know what is,” he said.
Women who enjoy the special treatment don’t think of it as a privilege.
“It’s just an attitude that some men practice out of courtesy all over the world,” one woman said.
Most women asked by Arab News said if they were offered such help they would certainly accept it. “Most of the time we don’t demand to be served first,” one said. “If we have the chance why not?”

Now only if this country was not segrated, women wouldnt be enjoying this kind of previllage. The good thing is.. that i can always send a women to bank to pay my bill and guranteed she will be done in a matter of second opposed to me myself goin there and waiting hour or two in queue.

Made-in-Israel Paper Cups Used in Local Hospital

JEDDAH, 22 August 2005 — Paper cups with Hebrew writing disturbed both employees and medical staff at King Khaled National Guard Hospital on Saturday. The catering subcontractor for the hospital coffee shops began using them on Saturday after their usual supply ran out.
“We were shocked and angry,” said an employee. “How can Israeli products be allowed and how did they enter this hospital?” he asked.
The Filipino employee who works in the Al-Musbah coffee shop asked: “Why is everybody mad about the cups?” He was told: “Because they are made in Israel!”
According to hospital officials, the matter is being investigated and action will be taken.
Saleh Al-Mazroi, executive director for operations at KKNGH, said the matter had been referred to authorities in Riyadh and was being dealt with.
On the bottom of the paper cup was a website address and a telephone number. When Arab News looked at the website — http://www.orion-rancal.co.il/. — it was found to be in Hebrew though there were a few words of English: “Israeli disposable paper, plastic and foam dinnerware supplier for restaurants.”
Arab News contacted Ibrahim Al-Musbah, manager and owner, who said, “I thank you for informing me. I will look into it personally and the offending articles will be disposed of.” He added that the company has a supplier in the Kingdom from whom they buy restaurant supplies. According to Al-Musbah, the supplier might be unaware of the problem.
Al-Musbah later contacted Arab News and said that the paper cups had come to his company by mistake. The cups were in a cardboard box that looked exactly like the ones his company normally receives and so the employees did not notice any difference. Al-Musbah added that the supplier was named “Jeelani” and that he would supply Arab News with his contact numbers today.
The paper cups were quickly withdrawn from use but might there not be other, less obvious, Israeli products in our shops and marketplaces?

The sky did not fall and the earth did not shatter. The anger over Israeli drinking cups is plain nonsense. And on top.. we all know that israeli made products surface from time to time in the saudi markets. This includes high tech equipments like Computer processors, mobile phones and various electronics. It doesnt make sense where did the israeli made paper cups infiltrated their way in. Because saudi arabia itself is an exporter of dispensible plastic and paper cups. There makes no sense of importing these products.. execpt if somebody wanted them to be here on purpose..
Back to my orignal question....what is soo friggin panicking about Israeli made paper cups... they may not even be really made in israel.. but in jordan vietnam or something.. but printed in hebrew.

The sky did not fall and the earth did not shatter. The anger over Israeli drinking cups is plain nonsense. And on top.. we all know that israeli made products surface from time to time in the saudi markets. This includes high tech equipments like Computer processors, mobile phones and various electronics. It doesnt make sense where did the israeli made paper cups infiltrated their way in. Because saudi arabia itself is an exporter of dispensible plastic and paper cups. There makes no sense of importing these products.. execpt if somebody wanted them to be here on purpose..
Back to my orignal question....what is soo friggin panicking about Israeli made paper cups... they may not even be really made in israel.. but in jordan vietnam or something.. but printed in hebrew.
Hillarious - Women Police in Iran

This is the women police in Iran.A police women in abaya doesnt make sense. If u have soo much moral issues in putting women in the right clothing for police service. Then just better dont have a women police squad. The criminals and terrorists these police women may fight wont come wearing abayas or "moral" clothing.
Just a side note, i like the fact they are using Mercedes-Benz vehicle for police.. what sucks is that its just a C200 and no Kompressor (aka non-supercharged) .. it will be slow as hell.. and imcompetent when it comes to chasing..

Today morning when my friend called me informing that Saudi king has passed away, I though he was joking and cut him off saying fool someone else. But then a quick glimpse at news websites proved it was true. King Fahd has indeed died. I wonder how many days vacation and mouring would it be?? Here are links to news
